June 26th: for a blazingly hot evening, a group of resistant, curious students and guests investigated their interest for 3D printing @MCEI Mannheim. Under the passionate instruction by 3D printing expert, Prof. Dr. Tobias Günther, the adventurers learned how to use the program Sketch Up to model one of Mannheim’s most famous and beautiful sights: The Water Tower.
After having learned the basics of 3D modeling by this example, two experts showed the possibilities of 3D printing technology for businesses. Nima Abbaspour, a researcher at DHBW Mannheim, introduced his 3D printed (and foldable!) drone, which not only combined two popular technologies but also impressed and lit everybodies inner Gyro Gearloose.
#3Ddruck und #Drohne in einem? Nein, wir sammeln nicht einfach Buzzwords! Hier gibt es wirklich Leute, die Technologien vereinen. #gge17 pic.twitter.com/FZ6DGbp6R1

This was followed by a charismatic presentation by jewelry designer and architect Thomas Mrokon, the founder of Monomer. His retrospect of his career and founding experience was not only animated and honest, but also enlightening as to how his experiences as an architect enabled him to think of jewelry differently. Printing the models in 3D makes it possible to construct jewelry differently and achieve an organic and unique look that couldn’t be produced by classical goldsmithing.
