Call for MSc Thesis: Scaling a hyperlocal digital media business in Germany

Kurpfalz Business Briefing (ku.bus) is offering an exciting opportunity for a Master Thesis inside the venture!

What is the company about?
Business Briefing Deutschland is the umbrella media brand under which Kurpfalz Business Briefing (ku.bus) was established and conducted its hyperlocal proof-of-concept in Rhein-Neckar. ku.bus bridges decision-makers of large corporates and young start-ups by informing and inspiring them via newsletter and social media (digital only) about regional start-ups, corporate innovations, lifestyle brands and local events. Having successfully launched newsletter and social media channels in Rhein-Neckar, Business Briefing Deutschland now plans for expansion.

What do we have to offer?

  • High profile team (former strategy & innovation consultant, professional communication designer, professional athlete)
  • access to interesting decision makers in large corporates, local start-ups and government institutions
  • access to insightful by invitation-only innovation & start-up events
  • true digital, no print media company
  • Great existing platform for small product-based start-ups to scale
  • First hand data stemming from proof-of-concept in Rhein-Neckar
  • First hand start-up experience in seed phase with the option to become an integral part of the team post-studies

What do we look for in a MSc thesis?
The first revenue streams based on ad sales and a brand platform for hyperlocal start-ups have been initiated. Business Briefing Deutschland now needs to grow by region and by sales channel. We conducted a rough initial analysis on different business models in the digital media industry and in other industries (cross industry business model innovation). We now need your help to take our analysis to the next level and thoroughly dive into future scenarios for growth. In the ideal world, we would come up with several options to scale based on our and your business model analysis of the media and other industries.

What do we expect from students?

  • Interest in
    • media industry and the impact of digitalization on existing publishing houses
    • start-ups and corporate innovations across all industries
    • the importance of local enterprises for the greater German economy
    • business model innovation
    • your local newspaper and its business section
    • usage and implications of new social media channels (Instagram, snapchat, linkedin, and whatever is next)
  • Big picture thinkers
  • Passionate about the future of media
  • Great at articulating a vision
  • Risk takers
  • Likable
