All our master thesis candidates have to attend our Master’s Colloquium. Next to attendance, all students writing their Master thesis are obliged to present their research at or post proposal stage.
The presentation should take place during the first half of the Master thesis processing time (latest 2 months after registration) in the Master’s Colloquium. Your presentation should be a detailed research proposal including a synopsis of all the literature, insights, methods and preliminary results that you have gathered so far. Your presentation is scheduled for 30 minutes (including a 10-15 minutes discussion). Your presentation should explain why your topic and research question is important, what new insights could potentially be gained from your thesis in the light of existing literature, and discuss hypotheses and the envisioned research methodology. The latter includes your empirical strategy (e.g. regression technique, dependent variable, independent variable, potential measures against endogeneity, and the set of controls you are thinking of). It is important to clearly state the research question and - most important - to demonstrate the feasibility (e.g. mass data access and time planning) of your research project. The Master's Colloquium is your platform and opportunity to discuss problems and questions regarding the thesis with your peer students and our assistant advisors. It is designed to foster knowledge and experience exchange among our master thesis candidates. Students should try to solve their questions in the Master's Colloquium, and not via e-mail. In general, the presentations in the Master's Colloquium should be considered as a chance and forum to receive early feedback on one's work.
Presenting your work (registration is necessary)
After getting your assistant supervisor's "Go!", please contact the chair's secretary Gabriele Schleicher (schleicher[@]ifm.uni-mannheim.de) to arrange a presentation slot (usually 3 presenters can be accomodated per Master's Colloquium). Your registration request must entail your student ID, your grade transcript of MAN 770, your assistant supervisor’s name, your thesis area, and your thesis title. Please note that you must register at least one week prior to the Colloquium.
Venue, time, and mandatory attendance
The participation in the Master’s Colloquium is obligatory for all current master candidates - no matter whether or not you are presenting your work in a session. Missing out on a meeting needs a prior written exception by Mrs. Schleicher who coordinates the Master Thesis Colloquium dates, invitations and the presentation schedules.
The Master’s Colloquium regularly takes place every two months during the whole calendar year (including semester breaks) on the first Tuesday of the month.
