About the Startup School

The STARTUP SCHOOL is conceptualised to motivate young researchers to develop new skills and methods, to think outside the box, and to solve challenges with innovative ideas.

You will work in interdisciplinary teams on real-world challenges from different stakeholders in healthcare. While qualifying yourselves using state-of-the-art innovation methods like Design Thinking, Rapid Prototyping, Business Model Innovation, you will also gain hands on experience in digital technologies that will shape our future.

Professional coaches and mentors will guide you through the full cycle of innovation in six weeks: The first week will be all about onboarding and understanding the challenges, choosing the one you will work on for the duration of this programme and getting to know your new team. In the second week, we will introduce you to Design Thinking methods and how to use them to test human desirability and understanding the user’s needs. The third week will be about exploring solutions and creating low-fidelity prototypes to test your ideas. In week four we will deep dive into digital technologies and you will get the chance to earn hands-on experience in coding and hacking. At the end of week four we are planning a Hackathon, so you can use your new skills and concepts to wrap a prototype with the help of IT experts. In week five we want to generate a business product out of your solutions, test the financial viability and create a viable business model. In the final week you will learn how to pitch the solutions you developed and to present your ideas at the final pitch night in front of a jury and the other teams.

During the programme you will have the exclusive opportunity to participate in a series of exciting talks from healthcare professionals and innovators..

About the Startup Lab

Heidelberg University presents the first round of the STARTUP LAB by heiINNOVATION. We want you to learn new methods, think outside the box and startup your own idea! You do not need a final startup idea or team. We are looking for motivated, enthusiastic students or alumni who would like to get out of the lecture hall. We are, however, also happy to welcome established ideas, startups and teams who are working on their case but need more input, mentoring sessions and support from startup experts.

The programme starts on Monday, 3 August 2020, with an online kickoff event, virtual get together and team building. Every Tuesday we upload learning videos and materials which are the basis for your exercises and the pitches. At the end of each week you will send us the exercises of your team, especially if you would like to gain your ECTS Certificate at the end of the programme. Every Wednesday you have the possibility to book consulting hours with heiINNOVATION team members who will help you with your challenges and answer questions. On Mondays we go live. We will organise online panels with great founders, investors and role models who will give you insights, tips and answer your questions. You will also have one-on-one online mentoring sessions on Mondays or Fridays. At the end of each week we will have a virtual get together, pitch preparations and a regular discussion with all teams. The highlight of the STARTUP LAB, however, will be the final pitch night. Every team will pitch in front of a jury and present their startup or project and will have the opportunity to win a special prize.
